Leading Like the Babaylans

    The arrival of March brings a national focus to the contributions of women in our society. This year, the celebration of National Women’s Month carries the theme “WE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society.” The 2026 sub-theme, “Lead like the Babaylans, Filipinas!”, specifically draws inspiration from our history. It highlights the pre-colonial spiritual and community leaders who held significant authority and wisdom. By reclaiming this heritage, we acknowledge that women have always been central to the leadership and stability of our communities.

    The month-long observance serves as more than a historical tribute. It is a push for concrete improvements in gender-responsive governance and economic opportunities. Government agencies and private sectors use this time to assess progress in closing gender gaps and to strengthen policies that protect the rights of all women. From rural entrepreneurs to corporate executives, the goal is to ensure that every woman has the space to participate in nation-building.
